Crocheted Toy Cocoon Bag Pattern
As promised, I put together the pattern for the crocheted toy bags that I’ve been making lately. This is the first pattern I’ve written, so bear with me and please let me know if you find any errors or if any of the directions are confusing.
Crocheted Toy Cocoon Bags
Materials: Any bulky weight yarn. Or you can crochet multiple strands of a smaller weight yarn. For mine I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Worsted/Medium Weight Cotton (in Soft Ecru) but crochet three strands at once to get the bulk I wanted.
Hook: For a larger bag with a stretchier and looser stitch, I used a P hook. These bags hold a surprising amount of toys. If you want a smaller, stiffer, more structured bag, I suggest using a smaller hook. I used an N hook for a smaller bag and found it good for really small toys.
Stitch marker: I used ones like these. But you could also just use a safety pin (I’ve even been known to use a bobby pin, in a pinch!)
Pattern:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
st/s = stitch/es
sc2to = single crochet decrease (single crochet two together)
This pattern is crocheted in the round – the SPIRAL way. If you’re unfamiliar with this method, you can see explanations here and here. I prefer the spiral method because it looks cleaner to me and is less confusing than traditional crochet-in-the-round. Just be sure to always use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch in each round.
Round 1: Ch 2, work 6 sc into 2nd ch from hook – 6 sts
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around – 12 sts
Round 3: (sc in next 1 st, 2 sc in next st) 6X – Total 18 sts
Round 4: (sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6X – Total 24 sts
Round 5: (sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6X – Total 30 sts
Round 6: (sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6X – Total 36 sts
Round 7: (sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6X – Total 42 sts
Round 8: (sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6X – Total 48 sts
Round 9-19: sc in every st around – Total 48 sts
Round 20: (sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog) 6X – Total 42 sts
Round 21-22: sc in every st around – Total 42 sts
Round 23: (sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog) 6X – Total 36 sts
Round 24-25: sc in every st around – Total 36 sts
Round 26: (sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog) 6X – Total 30 sts
Round 27-28: sc in every st around – Total 30 sts
Ch 6 sts for the handle loop
Round 29: sc in every stitch around – Total 30 sts
Fasten off and weave in ends

Thanks! I wound up making one so far with a P hook, and it took me two skeins of LB's homespun to get to row 24, then I changed to a different color and used maybe 1/4 of it to finish it up. It holds a bunch of Lego Duplex pieces, and I am going to be making many, many more!

Have you ever crocheted with plastic bags as your yarn? Personally, I've never done it, but I've seen it done. Might make for an interesting experiment to try! That way, you wouldn't have to line it and you could get the air circulating in there still. If you try it out, I'd love to hear how it goes!

I am making a few for my boys’ room. Using three colors of I Love This Yarn (Hobby Lobby) in Peacock, Limelight, and Orange. The colors are vibrant and friendly. I will be hanging them from a rope or chain on the wall by caribeaners or other hook type hardware. Will post picture once completed! Thanks for the pattern!

Thank you for sharing the pattern..I do alot of crocheting, but I had a question Wat kind of yarn would you recommend if say I would want to put my granddaughters bath toys in it? Or just make it like your pattern n just put a plastic bag in it. Thank you

These are amazingly easy and pretty! I crocheted them with leftover Caron© Simply Soft© that I had used to make throws and pillow covers. Three strands together with a P-hook was perfect. Now they match my decor and corral clutter from both myself AND my daughter. Next, I want to make some for her room and my sewing corner. I also thought cotton ones would work well in the kichen for holding potatoes and onions, but we’ll see. Thanks for the great pattern!

Wonderful pattern and easy to follow. Thank you! I modified it somewhat to suit the cotton yarn I had (increased to 72 st). Next time I would double the yarn. There are so many possibilities!
